Itinerary

What will I see?

Follow the south-to-north route of the famous "Cinque Terre" trail as you visit the three Italian seaside villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Vernazza, along with a boat ride to Portovenere. Through a combination of train, car, and boat, you will explore everything this region has to offer - from tenacious fishermen to pastel-colored houses, bell towers to terraced olive groves. This magical coast offers a little bit of wonder in each new encounter.

What will I do?

Sit back and relax as we drive along the "azure motorway," which hugs the Tyrrhenian coast before entering the Ligurian territory. Here, we begin our tour of Cinque Terre in the town of Riomaggiore, the most southern of the five cities. Riomaggiore is characterized by its pastel-colored tower houses, steep winding paths, and charming storefronts, nestled between two steep terraces facing the Mediterranean Sea.

From here, we take the train north to Manarola, a city set among vineyards, olive trees, and fragrant Mediterranean maquis. Manarola also offers a breathtaking sea promenade full of picture-perfect vistas. Afterwards, we continue on by train to the third city, Vernazza, which is considered one of the most beautiful villages in all of Italy. This jewel of a city is perched on top of a cliff, with views of the other four cities in Cinque Terre. Vernazza stretches out towards the sea with a small port against green hills. Here, you can take your time with a leisurely walk through the salt-tarnished houses and shop at some of the local stores. Vernazza is also a popular spot for seafood cuisine, of which there are many plentiful options.

From Vernazza, we take a one-hour boat ride between Portovenere and Vernazza for views of the rugged Italian coastline. Portovenere is rich in history and attracts many visitors for its unique and unparalleled beauty. Here, you can take a stroll along the seaside, visit the Church of San Pietro, and shop for local ingredients and handicrafts to take home as souvenirs. We then move on to admire the medieval sculptures of the Collegiate of San Lorenzo and Castello Doria, overlooking Portovenere. Afterwards, our tour concludes as we bid each other a warm Italian goodbye.

Note that the order of the visits may change

  • In the case of bad weather, we will travel by minivan instead of boat.

Why should I go?

Cinque Terre continues to be one of the most sought-after destinations in Italy due to its delicious seafood fare, charming seaside villages, many hiking paths, and friendly local population. The classic English authors Byron and Shelley long admired this region's ability to transport the visitor into a state of peace and serenity.
