What will I do?
Our day in the Old Town of Florence begins with a visit to Galleria dell'Accademia, where some of Michelangelo's iconic works are housed, including David, I Prigioni, San Matteo, and the Palestrina Piet. The young Michelangelo crafted David from a single large block of marble in just three years, and it stands today as a beautiful sculpture and an icon of the Renaissance model. It depicts a nude young man at the height of his physical vigor, displaying strength and courage that originated from an absolute faith in God. He further uses roses as a symbol of power and the invincibility of the Florentine Republic at the time, when it was at its maximum splendor and influence.
The afternoon will take you to the historic center of the Old Town, led by an experienced guide. We'll begin at the imposing Loggia del Bigallo, which overlooks the Piazza Duomo and its many spectacular pieces of medieval architecture that make up the religious heart of the city. Dominating the scene is the Duomo with its beautiful and world-renowned Brunelleschi dome, which is higher and wider than any constructed in that era. Next, we'll visit the Baptistery of San Giovanni with the Porta del Paradiso (Gates of Paradise). This is one of the very oldest buildings in the city, and the magnificent Porta del Paradiso depict biblical scenes in gilded panels. Finally we'll walk around to the Giotto bell tower, the most exquisite in all of Italy with its bells that date back as far as the early 18th century.
We'll continue our walking tour along vibrant Via Calzaioli in the middle of the historic town, where you'll be able to stop at the beautiful and awe-inspiring Orsanmichele Church, a masterpiece of Florentine Gothic art. It is decorated with shrines and imposing statues of the patron saints belonging to the powerful medieval trade guilds, all in unforgettable detail.
The next stop is the vibrant straw market, Mercato della Paglia, where you're invited to rub the nose of the bronze boar and throw a coin into the fountain for good luck. Moving on, we'll admire the picturesque Ponte Vecchio. This romantic bridge, recognized the world over and the oldest in the town, boasts an array of fine jewelry shops. Finally, we get to Piazza Signoria which is one of the most beautiful squares in the world and the political center of Florence. You will be amazed by the sheer beauty of the Fountain of Neptune with its incredible marble statue by Ammannati. In this outdoor museum, you will see elegant sculptural masterpieces of the Loggia dei Lanzi, including Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa and Gianbologna's Rape of the Sabines. You will also see the majestic town hall, the Palazzo Vecchio, with the crenelated Arnolfo tower, an iconic landmark on the Florence skyline.
As evening falls, we can wind down our day by admiring the countless works of art at the open gallery of Palazzo degli Uffizi, which opens into the square. Here you get to admire numerous works of art by Botticelli, Raffaello, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Cimabue, Giotto, Masaccio and many other Renaissance masters. Among the museum's many great masterpieces are the Birth of Venus and Primavera by Botticelli.
